Wood flooring is very much in favor, but over time it can start to look a bit less than it’s best. When this happens, it doesn’t necessarily need to be totally replaced. In many cases, Wood Flooring Refinishing in Tribeca is possible. There are just a few things you need to keep in mind before starting this process.
Not Always Possible
If too much of the wood is very damaged, it makes more sense to buy new wood flooring. Sometimes there are too many structural problems or the boards have too much movement between them to make refinishing feasible. Water marks or stains from pet accidents won’t always be totally covered up. A good quality floor can often be refinished five or six times, however.
Won’t Look Brand New
Wood Floor Refinishing in Tribeca will give the floors a facelift, but they won’t necessarily look brand new again. If there are only a few damaged boards, then these can be replaced, and small holes can be filled in. The top layer of wood is sanded off to remove surface scratches and stains. Deeper damage won’t necessarily be removed, or, if it is, will require more of the floor to be sanded off, limiting the potential for the floor to be refinished again in the future.
Room Will Be Temporarily Unusable
During the refinishing process, the room will have to be emptied of all the furniture and won’t be able to be used. It needs to be sanded, which will create a lot of dust that could also travel into other rooms. Then it will need to have at least two coats of stain and multiple layers of a polyurethane coating after that. This whole process can take at least three to five days to complete. Flooring with more damage and larger areas of a floor will take more time to refinish.
Weather Can Affect Results
Rain and high humidity can make it so the new finish takes longer to dry, so it may be best to wait for a less humid day to start the job. The wood flooring will absorb the extra moisture from the air.
