Towns and cities reflect the nature of those who currently live there as well as those who came before. Many cities and town across the United States have historic areas. Oklahoma State is no different in this regard. One of the better-known areas is Heritage Hills. This is where the original customs homes in Oklahoma City first appeared. You can find this special historic section in downtown Oklahoma City.

Heritage Hills

“Heritage Hills” is not the original name given to this section of town. In fact, this does not refer to a single neighborhood. It is a designation applied to three of Oklahoma City’s first residential districts. All are in the downtown area. These three currently comprise what became the first Historic Preservation District not only in Oklahoma City but also in Oklahoma State.

The region embraces the area between NW 13th Street and NW 23rd Street. In the early 19th century, this was once the desirable neighborhood. Here, the wealthy sought to build their custom homes. Their wealthy mansions indicated the status of their residences and displayed their social, political and economic worth for all to see.

As tastes changed and property value increased, the area became the target of “progressive” individuals who sought to change the face of the downtown neighborhoods. They wanted to replace the residences with commercial developments and modern structures. A classic example is the razing of the priceless Colcord Mansion. In place of this historic example of custom homes, stood a characterless office building.

No policy by the local government existed and help was not forthcoming from politicians who thought about a tax base or were simply apathetic about the city’s past. It was up to the current residences of this area, many still living in their family homes, to come up with a plan and put it into action. The fight began in the 1960s and succeeded in 1967 against eradication of the region when the State government planned a broad avenue that would have cut a destructive path through the downtown.

The Historic Residences of Heritage Hills

The first Oklahoma City Historic Preservation Commission was formed in 1967. Due to its impetus and hard work, it saved and extended the life of many of the original custom homes Oklahoma City. Standing today, as a result of their efforts, are the significant homes of which the Overholser Mansion is the crown jewel. The residence still contains the original furnishings of the family, including toys and other personal items.

Today, many original custom homes in Oklahoma are on view for all to see. Several open for annual tours to raise money for the ongoing preservation work required to maintain the integrity of this neighborhood. The existence of Heritage Hills is a sign that the historic architecture of a city can be saved when the will is there.
